Danger in the Wild: Rabies Cases Rise Across Four Virginia Counties
Virginia, USAFriday, July 10, 2026
Despite these findings, no human exposures have been reported so far. Still, health experts warn that the presence of rabies in wildlife is common in Virginia, especially among raccoons, skunks and bats. In the first quarter of the year alone, 117 animals statewide were confirmed to carry the disease.
The Rappahannock-Rapidan Health District urges residents to avoid contact with wild animals and unfamiliar pets. They also remind pet owners to keep their dogs and cats fully vaccinated against rabies. If an animal behaves oddly, people should contact local animal control immediately.
Keeping the community informed and vigilant can help prevent future outbreaks and protect both people and animals from this deadly virus.
