Cow longevity is a big deal in beef production. It's all about how long cows stay productive in their farming herds.   Predicting how long a cow will live is tricky. Her actual longevity is only known when she’s reached the end of life.   Researchers provided an interesting insight into cattle genetics. In Australian Angus cattle, researchers took two views towards predicting longevity. First, Consider the traditional view, or we can call it "How long a cow avoids being culled".  Then, functional longevity evaluates a cow’s long-term contribution to the herd by maintaining reproductive events.   Differentiating between these breeding tactics and ages while calculating these multiple  traits get Tough. Think culling events happens due multiple reasons. Wouldn't it be different if the cow got culled due to drought? vs dying full and bulging.   Those who got culled due to these different reasons were analyzed separately.   To tackle this researchers used a unique method. They utilized a Bayesian Gibbs sampler, which is a fancy tool for digging deeply into complex data. Using the key trait of interest from the age group of 2 to 11 years. The results showed that the genes didn't have as much of an effect on longevity as one might think. All in all, 0. 02 to 0. 19 is the percentage impact of heritability of  TLC which is traditional longevity on cows.  Functional longevity rating between 0. 02 to 0. 20. These figures suggest life at early and late stages should be viewed as two separate domains - with different genetic factors coming into play.  This research showed a vital insight.

Yet, there are part genderation biases and parts where data inclusion plays a vital role on life expectancy of cows.  They found that the estimated breeding values of sires whose daughters were still active appeared to be lesser when considering active daughters data were excluded. This best captured in younger Sires.    Critical view of this data at different time periods showed a interesting insight.    A staggering result from  this thought-provoking research. Current data has plenty of scope in space  of technical optimisation and insights.  The secret to improving cows' life span lies in long term animal husbandry practices. This research shows that target something sustainable cattle lifespans, this also involves cattle longevity analysis with newer targeted traits.
