COVID Vaccines Banned: A Unique Decision in Idaho
Southwest Idaho, USAFriday, November 1, 2024
The move has raised concerns about accessibility. People without housing, the homebound, and those in long-term care facilities relied on the health department for vaccinations. Now, they'll have to find other ways to get vaccinated.
Idaho has seen a decline in vaccine demand. In 2021, the district gave out 1, 601 COVID vaccines, but only 64 so far in 2024. The state has the highest childhood vaccination exemption rate in the US and recently dealt with a measles outbreak.
The medical director of the health department, Dr. Perry Jansen, argued for the necessity of vaccines. He emphasized the importance of a thoughtful, risk-benefit approach. However, the board's decision stands, and the impact on public health remains to be seen.
