Countries Offering Ancestry-Based Citizenship: A Quick Guide for Americans
Saturday, November 16, 2024
Ireland is pretty straightforward. If your parent was born there before 2005, you're automatically a citizen. If your grandparents or great-grandparents were Irish, you can apply too.
Italy has a few rules. You can get citizenship if your Italian ancestor didn't naturalize abroad before their child was born. If your ancestor was a woman, her child must have been born after 1948. You can also get citizenship if you're married to an Italian or have lived there for 10 years.
Poland offers citizenship by descent if you can trace your lineage back to ancestors born in Poland or its former territories. You'll need original documents to prove it.
Portugal is next. If you have a grandparent who is Portuguese, you can apply for citizenship. You'll need to visit Portugal in person to do this.
Lastly, there's Spain. They offer citizenship if you have a Spanish parent or grandparent. If you were adopted by Spanish nationals before you turned 18, you can apply too. But be ready to take two tests: one for Spanish language proficiency and another for cultural knowledge.
