Could Weight Loss Drugs Help Fight Alcohol Addiction?

Did you know that some drugs designed for weight loss might also be helpful for people dealing with alcohol addiction? A study published in JAMA Psychiatry suggests that Ozempic and Wegovy, both containing semaglutide, could play a significant role. Researchers in Sweden looked at around 228, 000 people with both Type 2 diabetes and alcohol use disorder. They found that those taking semaglutide were less likely to end up in the hospital due to alcohol-related issues. Interestingly, while the drug seemed to lower the risk, it didn't affect the rate of suicide attempts. But here’s the kicker: even with fewer people taking it, the hospitalization rate was remarkably low. Out of about 4, 300 individuals using semaglutide, only around 220 were hospitalized for alcohol-related problems.

Dr. Markku Lähteenvuo, a psychiatric researcher from Finland, emphasized the need for more treatment options. "We really need more tools in the toolbox, " he said. The study focused on GLP-1 drugs, including semaglutide and tirzepatide, which are key ingredients in Ozempic, Wegovy, Zepbound, and Mounjaro. These weight loss drugs have been making headlines for reducing other risks too, like the severity of sleep apnea and even the risk of death from COVID-19. But as their popularity grows, so do warnings about counterfeit medications from the World Health Organization and the Food and Drug Administration. So, while these drugs might offer a new avenue for treatment, it's crucial to stay vigilant about where and how they are sourced.
