This new model is a follow-up to the o1 and o1 mini released last December. Those models were known for boosting query processing, improving writing, and spotting errors in code. The o3 mini aims to up the ante, offering the power of a large language model in a more compact form.

Microsoft has a similar model, the Phi-3 Mini, which they say performs like GPT 3. 5 but is lighter. Other big names like Anthropic, Google, and Meta are also working on their own lightweight AI models.

But is this shift to lighter models good for the AI industry? While it could speed up updates, it's unclear if these updates will be genuinely beneficial or just small steps forward.

One big question is whether this new model will be available to all ChatGPT users or only those paying for the Pro tier. Sam Altman has hinted that ChatGPT Pro users might have an edge, as the o1 model can "think harder" for the toughest problems. The Pro tier costs a hefty $200 per month.
