Climbing the Grades: Making Rock Climbing Fairer with Tech
Thursday, March 6, 2025
Some of the best methods use natural language processing or something called recurrent neural networks. These fancy terms just mean the computer can learn from lots of examples and get better at guessing the difficulty. The best way to figure out how hard a climb is seems to be by looking at the route and using a method that's like how we understand language.
But there's still more to figure out. We need to keep testing and improving these methods. The goal is to make rock climbing fair for everyone, no matter who you are or how good you are at climbing.
Think about it. If we can make climbing routes fairer, more people will enjoy the sport. And that's what matters most. So, let's keep pushing to make rock climbing better for everyone.
