Choosing Where to Give Birth: What Ghanaian Women Decide

Ghana faces a tough challenge: many mothers still give birth at home instead of in health facilities. This can lead to higher chances of danger for both mother and baby. Yet in Ghana, some insured women still skip health facilities because of social and personal reasons that keep them away. A new study looked at data from 2022 to find out how common it is for mothers in Ghana to give birth in a health center and what pushes them to choose that option. The researchers found that not many women use facility‑based delivery, and they also mapped out how many people are covered by health insurance across different regions.

The findings point to a clear link between having insurance and deciding to give birth in a clinic, but they also highlight that other factors—like where a woman lives, her education level, and how far the nearest hospital is—play big roles. Understanding these patterns can help policymakers create better programs that encourage safer birth practices and ensure more mothers get the support they need during delivery.
