Chinese Army’s Quiet Hunt for Nvidia Chips
Chinese Military's Secret Hunt for Nvidia AI Chips Exposed
The Chinese military has been seeking Nvidia AI chips since 2019, a finding that contradicts statements from the company’s CEO.
Data pulled from six years of Chinese procurement records shows that army units repeatedly requested these high‑performance chips, even after the U.S. tightened export controls on semiconductor technology.
While the documents confirm that suppliers agreed to supply the chips, they do not prove that delivery actually occurred. Still, analysts say the evidence is clear proof that U.S. tech has reached Chinese defense circles.
The investigation looked at 3,800 records of advanced chip purchases and found over 500 instances where army divisions specifically asked for Nvidia products by name or technical details.
These findings illustrate how China has been trying to adapt and sidestep U.S. restrictions, seeking advanced AI hardware for its military purposes.
The study highlights a gap between public statements about the lack of dependence on U.S. chips and the real procurement activity taking place behind closed doors.
