China’s Military Might on Display: Stealth Jets and Drone Motherships

Last week, China showcased its advanced military technology at the Zhuhai Airshow. The event, held every two years, offers a rare glimpse into China’s military and industrial prowess. Experts see this as China’s attempt to match the U. S. in military capabilities, highlighting their efforts to modernize their forces and exert influence in Asia. The airshow drew nearly 600, 000 visitors and over $39 billion in orders, including a visit from Russia’s former defense chief. One of the highlights was the J-35A stealth fighter jet. Similar in appearance to the U. S. ’s F-35, the J-35A is equipped with two engines and can carry various precision-guided munitions. It’s designed for air combat and precise strikes on both land and sea targets. Another notable display was the HQ-19 anti-ballistic missile system, comparable to the U. S. ’s THAAD. Mounted on a vehicle, it can intercept ballistic missiles outside the atmosphere and may even tackle hypersonic weapons.

The airshow also featured the massive Jetank drone mothership, capable of carrying six tons and launching smaller drones. Additionally, the Orca, a stealth drone ship, was showcased. This 500-ton vessel can operate without resupply for extended periods and is equipped with advanced radar systems and various missiles. China also unveiled a new version of its PL-15 air-to-air missile, designed to fit into stealth fighters. Russia’s Su-57 stealth fighter also made its international debut, underscoring the close military ties between China and Russia. Contracts for the Su-57’s export were signed during the airshow.
