China's Military Drills Near Taiwan: A Warning Shot
Taipei, TaiwanFriday, October 18, 2024
Taiwan was once a part of Japan and later unified with China after World War II. However, in 1949, when the Communist Party gained control of mainland China, the Nationalists fled to Taiwan. Since then, Taiwan has been self-governed. Lai, who took office in May, continues the policy of the Democratic Progressive Party, which rejects China's claim that Taiwan is part of China. China often emphasizes that Taiwan's independence is a "dead end" and that reunification with the mainland is inevitable.
Taiwan's Defense Ministry saw these drills as a provocation and assured that their forces were ready to respond. The question remains: How will these military exercises affect the delicate balance between China and Taiwan?
