China's Hidden Lab Seeks Secrets of the Universe
Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory, Kaiping, ChinaFriday, October 18, 2024
Neutrinos are super-fast particles that come in three different masses, but scientists don't know which is heaviest or lightest. Juno will use data from two nearby nuclear power plants to solve this puzzle. If successful, it could help us understand more about our planet, the Sun, and even the history of the universe.
Even though similar experiments will happen in the US and Japan, Juno is leading the race. Around 750 scientists from 17 countries are involved, including some from the US. However, political tensions between the US and China are making it harder for some scientists to join.
One American scientist said that despite the challenges, working together shows that science can be apolitical.
