China's Big Plan: A Giant Solar Station in Space
ChinaThursday, January 16, 2025
The energy collected will be sent back to Earth wirelessly, using high-energy radio waves. This might sound like science fiction, but it's a real possibility. In fact, engineers at Caltech have already done it on a small scale.
The goal is to produce a lot of power. How much? Enough to match what we get from oil in a year. That's a lot of energy!
But China isn't the only one with this idea. Iceland and a UK company, Space Solar, are also working on a space solar array. They plan to power up to 3, 000 homes by 2030.
The big question is how well the energy transfer will work. It's been done before, but not on this scale. China will need to make sure the power gets to Earth efficiently.
This project is still in the early stages. We don't know when it will be finished. But it's an exciting idea that could change how we think about renewable energy.
