The Television Academy is introducing a new honor: the Legacy Award. This is the first major new Emmy in nearly 20 years. The award recognizes TV shows that have left a lasting impact on society and culture.
Criteria for the Legacy Award
To qualify, a show must:
- Have at least 60 episodes spread over five seasons.
- Continue to influence or inspire people, whether it's still on air or not.

- "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia"
Selection Process
- Nominations: Members of the TV Academy's board of governors or special awards committee can nominate shows. The public can also send in letters to suggest a show.
- Winners: Chosen annually by the Special Awards Committee.
The Award
- Statuette: A fancy engraved Emmy statuette.
- Presentation: Could be handed out during the Primetime Emmys, Creative Arts Emmys, Televerse festival, or Hall of Fame ceremony. The Academy will decide each year where it fits best.
