Celebrating Teachers in Coeur d'Alene

The 2024 Teacher of the Year for the Coeur d'Alene School District, Marcus Ross, had a simple message for his fellow educators: "Let's raise a glass to a fantastic first month of school!" He shared this during the New Educator Reception organized by the Coeur d'Alene Regional Chamber. The event was held at North Idaho College as the sun began to set and a sudden thunderstorm rolled through town. Ross, a math teacher at Lakes Middle School, acknowledged that teachers have a lot on their minds this time of year. They worry about lessons for the day and whether students understand what they're teaching. "Maybe you still need to cut those task cards into groups," he said, making the crowd chuckle with recognition. He reminded everyone to be present and enjoy each other's company, because every day is a new chance filled with energy and excitement. "That's what teaching is all about, right?" Ross continued. "Taking risks, trying new things, and knowing that if something doesn't work out or students are still struggling, there's always tomorrow." He emphasized that each day holds the potential for life-changing moments, whether it's teaching a student to tie their shoes or reminding them to wear deodorant.

Ross concluded by noting that the journey ahead will have its challenges and triumphs, but educators are not alone. "Lean on your colleagues," he advised. "Share your experiences and embrace every moment, both difficult and joyous." The reception brought together teachers, administrators, and education leaders from various schools across North Idaho. Educators introduced themselves and listened to speakers who expressed gratitude for their work in preparing future generations for the workforce. Vita Clute, a humanities teacher at Coeur du Christ Academy, was excited about her first year teaching there. "It's going amazing," she said. "The community is welcoming, my coworkers are supportive, and the kids are a joy to work with." Linda Coppess, President and CEO of the Coeur d'Alene Regional Chamber, invited educators and students to participate in Chamber activities like speaker events or volunteering at the Coeur d'Alene Convention and Visitor Bureau. She thanked all teachers and administrators for their dedication and support for education in every form, from public schools to trade schools and higher education.
