Celebrating Kids: New Heroes Shining in Akron’s Community

Akron, USAThursday, July 16, 2026
Akron Children’s has unveiled the winners of its second More childhood, please. Awards, a yearly ceremony that spotlights people who make life better for children and families in Ohio’s 33 counties. The program began last year to honor volunteers, parents, nonprofits and more who help kids thrive. The awards come in seven categories. In total, 147 people or groups were nominated this year. Winners will be honored at a dinner on September 23 in Fairlawn, where guests will hear stories of impact and enjoy music from Dance Unlimited, a group that lets patients dance at all levels. Deborah Sesek of Cuyahoga Falls won the Civic Impact award for turning a small after‑school program into a vital partnership. She coordinates volunteers who tutor and mentor students, drawing support from teachers, retirees, priests and even stay‑home moms. Sesek’s dedication shows how community effort can strengthen a child’s academic and emotional growth.
The Jacobs family from Copley earned the Family Impact prize. After their daughter’s cancer diagnosis in 2015, they launched a foundation that has raised half a million dollars and sent 7, 000 care‑bags to children at Akron Children’s. Their yearly 5K run, born from a family love of running, now brings the community together to support young patients. Victory Gallop of Bath Township received the Nonprofit Impact award for its unique equine therapy. For over three decades, the program blends science‑based treatment with the bond between horse and rider for kids dealing with chronic illness or behavioral issues. The group was the first in the U. S. to bring a pony into hospitals, giving children smiles when a small horse visits their rooms. The event will be hosted by two local journalists, and the awards aim to remind everyone that children’s health is a shared responsibility.
