Celebrating 50 Years: LA Film Critics Hand Out Awards

The Los Angeles Film Critics Association marked a big milestone this Sunday, celebrating their 50th anniversary with an awards ceremony. The night was full of surprises, with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross from Nine Inch Nails winning best score for their work in Challengers. Mikey Madison took home a prize for her performance in Anora, sharing it with Marianne Jean-Baptiste from Hard Truths. Anora also won in the supporting actor category, with Yura Borisov taking the prize. Kieran Culkin was another winner in this category for his role in A Real Pain. John Carpenter, a legend in science fiction, was honored with the career achievement award. The association praised his ability to create unique and emotional films that span over the 50 years they've been around. During the ceremony, Eduardo Williams' The Human Surge 3 received the Douglas Edwards Experimental Film Prize. The awards often predict Oscar nominations. Last year, Zone of Interest won the LAFCA trophy and later got an Oscar nomination for best international feature. This year's ceremony continued the tradition of having gender-neutral acting categories for the third year in a row.

The winners list includes a variety of categories. Jomo Fray won best cinematography for Nickel Boys, with Lol Crawley from The Brutalist as the runner-up. The music score award went to Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, with Eiko Ishibashi from Evil Does Not Exist as the runner-up. Judy Becker took the best production design award for The Brutalist, with Adam Stockhausen from Blitz as the runner-up. In the editing category, there was a tie between Nicholas Monsour for Nickel Boys and Hansjörg Weißbrich for September 5. Flow won the best animation award, with Chicken For Linda as the runner-up. For supporting performances, Yura Borisov and Kieran Culkin won for their roles in Anora and A Real Pain, respectively. Clarence Maclin from Sing Sing and Adam Pearson from A Different Man were the runners-up. Marianne Jean-Baptiste and Mikey Madison won for their lead performances in Hard Truths and Anora, respectively. Demi Moore from The Substance and Fernanda Torres from I’m Still Here were the runners-up.
