Catch the Southern Taurids: A Late-Night Meteor Extravaganza
USAMonday, November 4, 2024
What makes the Southern Taurids so special? They're made of debris from Comet Encke, which has the shortest orbit of any known comet around the sun. Every year, Earth passes through this dusty trail, causing the meteor shower we see. The bigger the space rock, the brighter and longer the streak—some even become meteorites when they hit the ground.
Every few years, the Taurids have a swarm of increased activity. This year, we're expecting normal rates, but who knows? You might still catch a spectacular sight. The Northern Taurids will peak around November 11-12, giving us more meteors to watch out for.
Remember, there's something magical about watching the universe interact with our planet. It's a reminder of the beauty and mystery of the cosmos. So, grab your chair, keep warm, and enjoy the show!
