Casino fined $7. 2 million for safety lapses

Sydney, AustraliaMonday, June 1, 2026
The New South Wales regulator has slapped a $7. 2 million fine on the Star Sydney casino, adding an order to set aside another $5 million. The penalty comes after the casino’s licence was suspended and a regulator‑appointed manager took control. Investigations by Liquor and Gaming NSW uncovered thousands of rule violations at the venue from December 2018 to September 2025. Most infractions were found during the casino’s own cleanup efforts, and some were reported by Star itself.
The regulator said many problems surfaced before the casino upgraded its systems, such as better card‑tracking technology. Chief Commissioner Philip Crawford warned that the fines show how seriously the regulator treats any breaches that could harm players or allow criminal activity. Star has not yet replied to inquiries. The company also reported a loss in the third quarter, blaming weaker seasons and lower table‑game income.
