Can Trump Run Again? The Constitution Says No
Former U.S. President Donald Trump recently suggested that he understands he cannot run for president again in 2028. The revelation came during his flight to South Korea, where he stated:
"Based on what I read, I guess I'm not allowed to run."
The 22nd Amendment Barrier
Trump has previously floated the idea of running for a third term, but the U.S. Constitution explicitly prohibits this through the 22nd Amendment, which limits presidents to two terms.
Trump even joked about running for vice president, but quickly dismissed the notion, stating:
"It wouldn't be right."
House Speaker Mike Johnson's Stance
House Speaker Mike Johnson, a constitutional lawyer, reinforced the impossibility of amending the Constitution to allow Trump another run. He noted that such a change would require decades of political support and nearly 10 years to achieve.
Trump's Poll Numbers and Disappointment
Despite the legal hurdles, Trump highlighted his record-high poll numbers, saying:
"I have my highest numbers that I've ever had."
However, he acknowledged the disappointment, while Johnson emphasized the importance of upholding the Constitution.
Future Uncertainty
While Trump has not officially ruled out another presidential bid, the Constitution remains a formidable obstacle. For now, his political future remains in the spotlight, even if his presidential aspirations may be over.
