The 2024 presidential election is reaching its climax, and it’s been anything but ordinary. Americans have seen the current Democratic president step down, a Republican candidate barely escape an assassination attempt, and the rise of the first woman of color on a national ticket. Money plays a crucial role in politics, and where campaigns spend funds often reveals their strategic priorities.

David Wright from CNN tracks campaign spending and shared insights with me about the final month’s ad wars. The Harris campaign is heavily investing in three key “blue wall” states: Pennsylvania ($5 million), Michigan ($4 million), and Wisconsin ($2.7 million). Meanwhile, the Trump campaign is focusing on the Sun Belt, particularly Pennsylvania, where they are spending $3.8 million this week. Both sides view Pennsylvania as a critical state for securing 270 electoral votes. Early voting and mail-in ballots are already underway in many parts of the country, although early voting levels may not reach the heights seen during the 2020 pandemic election. Despite Trump’s skepticism about mail-voting, Republicans are embracing it this year to match Democrats' efforts in key states.
