Bus Drivers Seek Fair Deal from CATS

In Baton Rouge, the Capital Area Transit System (CATS) is facing tension with its employees' union, Amalgamated Transit Union 1546. The union is pushing for a fair contract, alleging a hostile work environment and poor negotiations. Union President George Decuir expressed that the current contract, extended to January 8, isn't fair to the staff. They're seeking better wages and working conditions to lead the industry in Louisiana.

Decuir pointed out a controversial image found in the employee breakroom, which he believes promotes workplace violence. The image showed stick figures representing the union and a worker, with the union figure pointing a gun at the worker. Despite this, the union remains hopeful for a resolution during the upcoming mediation meeting. If mediation fails, the union plans to involve the community and local politicians to push for a fair contract. They aim to avoid disrupting services. CATS, acknowledging the essential role of transit workers, pledged to negotiate in good faith for a fair outcome for all parties involved.
