Bullying Links to OCD: What’s the Story?

They followed over 16, 000 twins from the time they were 15 until they were 24. They wanted to see if those who experienced bullying were more likely to develop OCD. Guess what? They found that for every standard increase in bullying, the odds of getting OCD went up by 32%. That’s quite a jump!

But here’s where it gets interesting. These researchers used a clever method comparing twins. You see, twins share lots of the same genes and environment. So, they compared how one twin fared against the other when it came to OCD and obsessive-compulsive symptoms (OCS). When they did this, the link between bullying and OCD weakened. This suggests that genes might be playing a big role in the connection. So, being bullied might not directly cause OCD, but it could be that the same genes that make someone more likely to be bullied also make them more susceptible to OCD.
