Bullying Among South African Teens: The Role of Childhood Struggles and Friend Influence

Bullying is a big problem among teens in South Africa. A recent study looked into how childhood hardships, the influence of friends, and personality traits affect teen bullying. Researchers analyzed data from 769 high school students using a method called Structural Equation Modelling. They found that tough experiences in childhood can lead to bullying later on, and this is often influenced by friends and the type of person the teen is. For example, kids who are more organized (conscientious), outgoing (extraverted), or emotionally stable might be less likely to bully others.

These results support a theory called Social Learning Theory, which says that kids learn behaviors from their peers. This study suggests that schools should focus on helping kids who have had tough childhoods and encouraging positive friendships. It also highlights the importance of fostering good personality traits to prevent bullying.
