Bullet In Mosque: Police Say It Was Accidental Shot

Hillsboro, USAWednesday, March 25, 2026
The Hillsboro police announced that they have no proof the Islamic Community Center was aimed at during a shooting that left a bullet stuck in its wall on Saturday morning. The incident happened right after Eid al‑Fitr, a time when many families visit the center for community events. The bullet entered an area usually used by schoolchildren, but luckily no one was inside when it struck. Center leaders and national groups quickly asked for an investigation into a possible hate crime. The mosque said law enforcement was looking into bias motives. Police, however, believe the projectile came from a legal target‑shooting range about a mile away. They describe it as an “errant projectile” that may have ricocheted before hitting the building.
Chief Jim Coleman said the department worked hard to find facts and that they understand the fear the event caused. He added that if any evidence of a crime surfaces, it will be handed to the Washington County District Attorney. Commissioner Nafisa Fai praised the police’s swift response and noted that no injuries occurred. The center president, Ahmad Al Mohammad, expressed deep gratitude for the lack of harm but highlighted the lasting psychological impact on the community. Mayor Beach Pace praised the police’s thorough investigation and reaffirmed Hillsboro’s support for its Muslim neighbors. He emphasized that the city stands together against any threat to safety or well‑being. The police remain open to new evidence and will keep the public updated on any developments regarding a potential hate crime.
