Breaking Barriers: SpaceX's Historic Polaris Dawn Mission Paves the Way for Commercial Space Exploration
Space, FloridaSunday, September 15, 2024
But what does it mean to expose the crew to the vacuum of space? To begin with, the Crew Dragon capsule had to be depressurized, which puts the crew at risk of "the bends" or decompression sickness, a condition experienced by scuba divers. Moreover, the EVA suits designed by SpaceX had to be tested in extreme temperatures and had to remain pressurized and funnel oxygen supplies to all four crew members. The stakes were high, but the mission seemed to go off without any major issues.
So, what's next for the Polaris Dawn crew? They still have a key milestone ahead: coming home. The team is set to return to Earth as early as this weekend, splashing down off the coast of Florida aboard the Crew Dragon capsule. The crew has only about five or six days' worth of life support on the vehicle, making the return to Earth a crucial step.
