Brazil's Ex-Highway Chief Nabbed in Paraguay After Bold Escape Bid
Brazil's Supreme Court has taken a firm stance against fugitives involved in the 2023 coup attempt. Silvinei Vasques, the former head of the federal highway police, has been ordered to jail after being caught trying to flee to El Salvador with a fake passport.
A Bold Escape Attempt
Vasques, sentenced to 24 years for his role in the coup plot, was on the run after breaking his court-ordered ankle monitor. His escape plan was elaborate:
- Rented a car and fled from Santa Catarina, Brazil.
- Used a fake passport to attempt travel to El Salvador.
- Even brought his dog along for the escape.
The court's decision to jail him instead of reinstating house arrest underscores their determination to prevent further attempts.
A Pattern of Flight
Vasques isn't alone in his attempt to evade justice. Others involved in the coup plot have also tried to flee:
- Alexandre Ramagem, former intelligence agency director, was ordered arrested in November after fleeing to the U.S.
- Former President Jair Bolsonaro attempted to remove his ankle monitor with a soldering iron while under house arrest.
Silence from Defense
Vasques' lawyer has not commented on the escape attempt. The court's actions send a clear message: no more leniency for fugitives.
