Border Tensions Flare as Thailand and Cambodia Clash Again

Thailand launched air strikes near their shared border with Cambodia, targeting a Cambodian military stronghold after civilians had evacuated. However, Cambodia claims Thailand's actions were reckless, hitting civilian homes and injuring people.

A History of Conflict

This isn't the first time these neighbors have clashed. A shaky truce in July ended five days of heavy fighting, but the conflict has now spread along their 500-mile border. At least 41 people have died, and nearly a million have been displaced.

Escalation and Blame

Both countries blame each other for the latest violence. The fighting is now centered in Cambodia's Banteay Meanchey province, where Thailand dropped up to 40 bombs using F-16 jets. Thailand claims they successfully took control of Nong Chan village.

Diplomatic Efforts

Negotiators from both sides are in talks, with defense ministers set to join soon. Thailand's Prime Minister hopes this round of discussions will lead to a lasting peace, allowing people to return home.

International Involvement

The US and China are also trying to broker a ceasefire. This border dispute has persisted for over a century, with occasional clashes killing soldiers and civilians. Tensions escalated in May when a Cambodian soldier was killed, and in late July, a Cambodian rocket attack on Thailand led to Thai air strikes, sparking five days of intense fighting.
