Boosting Metal Powers with Quinols: A New Way to Fight ROS
Wednesday, December 18, 2024
Sometimes, compounds that aren't great at one job can be really good at another. Quinols can also make some metals better at reducing oxygen, similar to how some enzymes work. They can even change the final product of this reaction. By carefully controlling the environment around the metal, scientists can use common and cheap metals like iron and cobalt to efficiently reduce oxygen. The starting point of the reaction cycle matters, with iron starting as Fe(III) being more efficient so far.
