Books That Dare to Challenge: A Look at Banned Reads in the US
In the United States, books are often challenged and banned, especially in schools and libraries. The American Library Association (ALA) reports that in 2024, there were 821 attempts to ban books. These attempts are not just from parents but also from pressure groups and decision-makers. The most common reasons for these challenges are objections to:
- Sexual content
- Race
- LGBTQ+ themes
- Other social justice issues
A Decrease in Reported Challenges
Interestingly, the number of reported book challenges decreased between 2023 and 2024. However, not all challenges are reported. Sometimes, books are never even considered for purchase or are placed in restricted areas due to pre-censorship laws.
Hope Amidst Censorship
Despite these challenges, there is hope. In Texas, a group called the Texas Freedom to Read Project was formed to fight against censorship. Librarians in several states are also working with civil rights groups to oppose book bans and related legislation.
