Bone Building: The Hidden Power of CREG1
Saturday, May 17, 2025
In a recent study, researchers looked at CREG1's role in osteoporosis. They found that CREG1 levels were lower in people and animals with osteoporosis. When they increased CREG1 levels, they saw more bone formation. This was compared to models with bone loss due to ovariectomy, a surgery that removes the ovaries and often leads to bone loss.
The study also showed that reducing CREG1 levels hindered the process of BMSCs turning into bone cells. On the other hand, increasing CREG1 levels boosted this process. Interestingly, the benefits of CREG1 seemed to be linked to its role in mitophagy. When mitophagy was blocked, the positive effects of CREG1 on bone formation were also blocked.
This research highlights the potential of CREG1 as a new target for osteoporosis treatment. By understanding how CREG1 works, scientists might develop new ways to promote bone formation and combat bone loss. This could lead to better treatments for osteoporosis and other bone diseases.
