Blue Jackets consider moving another top player

Columbus, USATuesday, June 30, 2026
The Columbus Blue Jackets have added another name to their trade list this season. According to reports, former fifth overall pick Kent Johnson could be on the move, joining established stars like Zach Werenski and Kirill Marchenko as players available in potential deals. At 23, Johnson has spent five years with the team but hasn't found a permanent place in the lineup. His most productive season came in 2024 when he scored 24 goals and 57 points. Before that, his numbers stayed below 16 goals and 40 points. His draft year looked promising, but things didn't go as planned after that.
When Columbus selected Johnson in 2021, the plan was clear: he was supposed to become the team's next top center. The Blue Jackets passed on other skilled forwards like William Eklund, Wyatt Johnston, and Mackie Samoskevich to make him their pick. Yet, over time, other players like Adam Fantilli, Sean Monahan, and Charlie Coyle moved ahead of him in the lineup. Now, Johnson's future with the team is uncertain. If the Blue Jackets decide to trade Johnson, they likely won't get back a high draft pick. A third- or fourth-rounder might be the best they can hope for right now. Still, moving him could be seen as a win for the team, especially if they can bring in fresh talent in return.
