Bird Flu's Warning: What's Next?
Thursday, December 5, 2024
Last year, a vet in Texas found sick cows. She sent samples, and it turned out to be H5N1. Alarm bells should have rung, but they didn't. We still don't know much about how it spreads among cows. Farmworkers might have it and not know. The virus is moving around, not isolated.
Remember mpox? Last year, it hit the U. S. The response was quick and smart. Not so with H5N1. The CDC can't do much here. The USDA runs the show, and it's more interested in dairy profits than global health.
Bad news keeps coming. A pig in Oregon got it. A teen in Canada is critically ill. A kid in California might have caught it from someone. Wastewater in several states shows rising virus levels.
Biden's got seven weeks left. He could still act. Mandatory testing for cows, milk, and workers. Isolate infected herds. Speed up the cow vaccine. It's not about credit. It's about avoiding a disaster.
