Chaffee County is dealing with a bird flu problem.  Officials found a deadly virus, H5N1, in wild ducks and geese around Salida.

The virus is very harmful to birds.  They call it Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza.

Near Sands Lake, people spotted about 20 dead or sick birds.  Tests showed they were likely infected.

Chaffee County has lots of waterfowl.  Officials want everyone to know about the virus.

The risk to people is low, but it's smart to avoid sick or dead birds.

If you think you've been near sick birds, watch for flu symptoms for 10 days.

Symptoms include trouble breathing, fever, cough, sore throat, and aches.

If your pet might be sick, look for fever, tiredness, and breathing issues, then call a vet.

There's treatment for people who get sick, but it's better to start early.

Bird flu can be serious, but staying aware helps keep everyone safe.

Let's remember, this isn't the first time bird flu has shown up in Colorado.  Last year, there was a similar outbreak in other parts of the state.  This shows that these viruses can pop up anywhere, anytime.  It's a good reminder that we need to stay vigilant and informed.
