Mayor Zohran Mamdani Urges Residents to Prepare

New York City is facing a serious snowstorm, and Mayor Zohran Mamdani is urging everyone to be ready. The city is expecting a lot of snow, possibly the most in five years. The mayor wants people to stay safe and avoid unnecessary travel.

City Agencies on High Alert

The mayor held a press conference at the Spring Street Salt Shed in Manhattan. He said all city agencies are working together to handle the storm. The city is prepared with plows and salt to keep roads clear. The mayor also shared the city's snow response plan on social media.

Storm Details and Warnings

The storm is expected to bring heavy snow starting Sunday morning. By midday, there could be 2 inches of snow on the ground. The mayor advised people to stay home and avoid driving. The snow will fall heavily in the late morning and early afternoon. Visibility will be very low, and winds will be strong, up to 35 mph. This means near-blizzard conditions.

Extreme Cold and Shelter Services

The mayor also warned about very cold temperatures lasting through the next week. This is the coldest period New York has seen in about eight years. A Code Blue is in effect, meaning homeless services are working to ensure everyone has access to shelter and warmth.

Schools, Voting, and Closures

  • Public schools will not have a snow day on Monday. The decision on whether to have in-person or remote classes will be made by Sunday at noon. Teachers and staff are prepared for either scenario.
  • Due to the state of emergency, early voting for the Feb. 3 special elections will be suspended on Sunday and Monday. The state is working with the city to extend voting hours later in the week.
  • Several city locations, including zoos and museums, will be closed on Sunday. Some events, like the Rangers Alumni Classic, have been canceled.
