Biden's Visit: A Long-Awaited Apology to Native Americans
Laveen Village, Phoenix, USAFriday, October 25, 2024
At least 973 Native American children died in these schools, and over 18, 000 children as young as 4 were forcibly taken from their parents. The Interior Department's investigation called for a U. S. government apology, which Biden is now delivering. Ramona Charette Klein, a boarding school survivor, praised Biden's effort but stressed the need for concrete action and amends.
Democrats have been actively engaging with Native American communities. Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, met with tribal leaders in Arizona and Nevada. The Democratic National Committee launched a six-figure ad campaign targeting Native American voters in several states.
The White House highlighted Biden's actions to support Native Americans, including designating national monuments and directing billions in federal spending to tribal nations. However, the political environment remains competitive, with both campaigns focusing on micro-targeting groups like the Indian community and young voters.
