Beyond the Wedding Vows: China's Rise in Divorce Photography
ChinaFriday, September 20, 2024
But what's driving this trend? Peng Xiujian, a senior research fellow at Victoria University in Australia, attributes it to a younger generation prioritizing personal freedom and career development. "The idea of staying in an unhappy marriage 'for the sake of appearances' or out of obligation is losing its grip," she says.
For some, divorce photography is a way to move on and find closure. Liu Wei's business, which helps couples destroy their wedding photos, has been in high demand. He's already destroyed over 2,500 couples' photos since opening his factory in 2021. "A divorce might not necessarily be a bad thing. It could be a good thing. So there's no need to feel sad about it," he says.
As the trend continues to grow, photographers like Tan are already thinking ahead. Her latest plan involves luring return clients in case fate brings the divorced couples back together. "I'll give them an 18% discount if the two people remarry and ask me to take photos," she says.
