Beliefs Stick Even When Money's on the Line

Politically charged misinformation is a tricky beast. People often reject or accept it based on their beliefs, not facts. Some think it's because folks don't really care about the truth. But what happens when you offer a reward for telling it like it is? Previous tests showed that people's bias drops when there's a carrot dangled for being accurate. But what about those weird new claims popping up online daily? Can cash change minds then? Scientists ran three tests, asking over a thousand conservatives and liberals to rate the credibility of statements. They used 20 claims that either backed or challenged social science findings only experts knew. The results were surprising.

Even with rising stakes, most folks stuck to their political guns. Sixty-six to seventy-eight percent of the time, liberals and conservatives saw things differently. And here’s a kicker: folks were sure they were right, even when they weren’t! So, what does it all mean? It seems that when it comes to new info, people genuinely believe what fits their views. Money’s not enough to change that. This suggests that efforts to cut down on false info might not work as hoped. The beliefs are real, not just for show.
