Beef Heifers in Different Regions: Growth, Health, and Carcass Changes

Researchers checked how cows from South Dakota (SD) and Texas (TX) grew and changed when finished in either state. They divided 190 heifers (weighing around 483 kg from SD and 425 kg from TX) into four groups based on their origin and finishing location. They weighed the heifers regularly, and some were moved between states. The moved cows had lower body temperatures during and after transport, and their vaginal temperatures spiked when loading and unloading. They also had more respiratory disease symptoms.

Cows in Texas faced hotter weather (temperature-humidity index over 75) for most of the feeding period, while South Dakota had milder conditions. The results showed that where cows were finished affected their growth, carcass traits, and health. Those transported to hotter areas had better yield grades but worse growth recovery and quality grades. Those moved to cooler areas recovered growth better and had improved quality grades but lower yield.
