B.C.'s Indigenous Leaders Call Out Conservative Leader's Reconciliation Stance: Is Rustad 'Throwing Natives Under the Bus' for Political Gain?

The First Nations Leadership Council is not happy with B.C. Conservative leader John Rustad's recent comments on reconciliation and Indigenous rights made in a Jordan Peterson podcast. In a strongly worded statement, the council accused him of "throwing Indigenous people under the bus" to gain political advantage.Chief Don Tom, vice-president of the Union of BC Indian Chiefs, was particularly irked by Rustad's assertion that the relationship between provincial government and First Nations is an "assault on private property rights." "That's insulting, offensive and perpetuates racist stereotypes," he said. "We are sick and tired of Mr. Rustad using us as a political punching bag." The council also criticized Rustad for aligning himself with Peterson, who has made ignorant comments belittling the legitimacy of Indigenous governments. This seems like quite the about-face from his time serving as Minister of Aboriginal Relations in 2013 when he negotiated agreements with First Nations and expressed support for recognizing Haida Nation title. "Not long afterwards, he attacked the legislation on video while outside the legislature," Regional Chief Terry Teegee pointed out. "What gives?"

Rustad's history of climate change denial and opposition to what he calls "indoctrination" in schools also raised eyebrows among Indigenous leaders who worry his "radical political positions" could undermine the welfare of all British Columbians.Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, president of the Union of BC Indian Chiefs, urged voters not to ignore this: "As a great grandfather, I urge you to pay attention. Rustad has proven himself supportive of bizarre wingnut conspiracy theories and displays contempt for human rights and reconciliation at every turn. His economic worldview is 'drill baby drill' with no concern for our environment or grandkids." The council's message was clear: Our beautiful environment, children, and grandchildren don't deserve the "destructive" legacy of a Rust a Rustad government.
