Battlefield Breathing: Helping Wounded Soldiers Breathe Better
BattlefieldSaturday, November 23, 2024
Mechanical ventilation is like giving the lungs a break. A machine helps the lungs breathe while they recover. But sometimes, even this isn't enough. That's where extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) comes in. ECMO is like a temporary lung outside the body. It removes blood, adds oxygen, and sends it back to the body.
Doctors can use these treatments to help soldiers with ARDS. However, they need more training and experience to use ECMO, which is more complex. Also, ECMO isn't always available on the battlefield, making mechanical ventilation the go-to choice.
