Automation at Ports: Job Growth or Loss?

In 2022, a study by the Pacific Maritime Association claimed that automating two Los Angeles container terminals in 2015 led to an 11.2% increase in union workforce by 2021. However, another study backed by the International Longshore and Warehouse Union found that automation eliminated the equivalent of 572 full-time jobs annually at the port from 2020 to 2021. The use of automated systems like self-driving trucks and semi-automated cranes can speed up cargo handling, but resistance from labor unions has limited their implementation in US ports.

The ongoing labor dispute between the union and shippers centers on wages and automation, with President Biden unlikely to intervene. Experts predict that unions may eventually accept gradual integration of new technologies if they have a say in how they are used and workers receive appropriate training for new jobs created by automation.
