In Austria, the political landscape shifted suddenly when Chancellor Karl Nehammer announced his resignation. The crisis meeting held by the conservative ruling party, People’s Party (OVP), aimed to select a successor. Christian Stocker, aged 64, was chosen as the interim party leader. This move comes after failed attempts to form a centrist coalition without the far-right Freedom Party (FPO). The FPO emerged as the front-runner in September’s election, posing a challenge to President Alexander Van der Bellen.

The options now include a snap election or tasking FPO leader Herbert Kickl with forming a government. Nehammer's departure might pave the way for a coalition with the FPO, a party known for its tough stance on immigration and ties with Hungary's Viktor Orban. The OVP and FPO have a history of cooperation at the state level, but a national alliance could see the OVP as the junior partner for the first time.
