The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has given a heads-up to sports leagues. They warn that top players flaunting their wealth on social media platforms could be targeted by burglars. It’s not just any burglars, but possibly organized groups from South America who monitor athletes' schedules and security details. Recent victims include players like Kansas City Chiefs' Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes, as well as Milwaukee Bucks' Bobby Portis Jr. , and Dallas Cowboys’ Dak Prescott's fiancée. These incidents happened when the players were away for games, making it easier for thieves to strike. Experts suggest that thieves are drawn to sports stars who post pictures showcasing their expensive belongings like jewelry and electronics. These posts essentially give criminals a map of what's valuable and when the house might be empty. The FBI advised athletes to keep their luxury items off social media to reduce the risk of becoming a target. This isn’t new advice, as leagues have been giving similar warnings for a while.

A well-known criminal case from Chile involving actor Keanu Reeves' stolen watch points to similar tactics used by burglars targeting high-profile individuals. It's a reminder that even when these incidents aren't directly linked, the methods and motives can be similar. Law enforcement agencies in the U. S. and Chile have been working together to identify and prosecute these organized crime groups. However, there's a growing concern about the ease with which some criminals can enter the country using visa waiver programs without thorough background checks. Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer has highlighted this issue, emphasizing that many of these criminals aren't here as tourists but to steal high-value items. LAPD Chief of Detectives Alan Hamilton added that some of these suspects belong to transnational gangs concentrated in areas where high-net-worth individuals often reside.
