Asteroid 2024 YR4: Should We Worry?
Rio HurtadoThursday, February 20, 2025
If 2024 YR4 were to hit Earth, it would likely land somewhere along a "risk corridor" that stretches from the eastern Pacific Ocean to South Asia. But even if it does hit, it might burn up in the atmosphere and cause no damage at all.
This isn't the first time scientists have tracked a potentially hazardous asteroid. In 2004, they spotted Apophis, a much larger asteroid. At first, it seemed like a big threat, but further observations ruled out any immediate danger.
Asteroid 2024 YR4 is currently rated as a Torino Scale 3, which means it's larger than 65 feet and has a 1% or greater chance of impact. But remember, even if it does hit, it might not cause any damage.
So, should we worry about asteroid 2024 YR4? Not really. Scientists are monitoring it closely, and the chances of impact are still very low. Plus, even if it does hit, it might not cause any harm.
