Assessing Urban Cyclists' Exposure to PM2. 5 in Mendoza, Argentina

In a bid to curb carbon emissions, many cities have been pushing folks to ditch cars and hop on bikes instead. Unfortunately, pedaling through traffic might not be as healthy as it sounds. Cyclists often breathe in more polluted air than others, especially in congested cities. To shed some light on this issue, researchers turned to the Mendoza Metropolitan Area in Argentina. Using low-cost sensors, they mapped out PM2. 5 exposure levels for cyclists of different ages and genders.

PM2. 5 is nasty stuff, tiny particles that can deeply penetrate the lungs. They found that busy and quiet routes, as well as peak and off-peak hours, made a big difference in the amount of pollutants bikers inhaled. It's not what you'd expect – older riders and males faced higher exposures. This study is a first in Latin America to showcase these findings with detailed exposure maps. The goal? To guide city planners in creating safer, cleaner cycling routes.
