Android's Settings Gets a Splash of Color

Google is working on a major update for the Android Settings app. The goal is to make the interface more vibrant and engaging. This change is part of a broader effort to refresh the look and feel of the Settings app. It is not clear if this update is part of the new Material Design 3 Expressive theme. A few days ago, hints were found that Google might unveil a new Material Design theme at the upcoming Google I/O developer conference. While there have been some clues about this new theme, the details are still fuzzy. Recently, in the latest Android beta release, signs point to colorful icons being a part of Google's updated design plans. The fourth beta of Android 16 does not bring huge changes to the user interface. However, Google has started to update the Settings app with a more expressive design. Specifically, the Settings homepage, which is the first screen you see when you open the app, is getting a makeover. Currently, the icons on this page are simple and gray, with no borders. In the new design, these icons will be inside colored circles, adding a bit of pizzazz to the page.

Some icons might not get the color treatment right away. For example, the "Digital Wellbeing & parental controls" entry will keep its gray icon. This is because the icon is provided by a separate app, not the Settings app itself. This shows that Google still has some work to do before the new design is ready for everyone. As a result, it is unlikely that this new design will be in the first stable release of Android 16. Instead, it might come in a later update or even be delayed until Android 17. The colors and icon designs might change before the new design is officially released. Right now, there is no clear pattern to the colors chosen for each icon. Some related entries do share the same color, but it is not consistent. The new design aims to make the Settings app more visually appealing. However, it is not clear if this will improve the user experience. Some people might prefer the simple, grayscale look. Others might enjoy the added color and flair.
