Aerosol Particles in Wastewater Plants: What's in the Air?

Wastewater treatment plants have grit chambers where tiny particles, called aerosols, float around. These particles can have bacteria and other chemicals. In a study of nine plants in China, researchers found different amounts of aerosols. They found 160 to 432 micrograms per cubic meter of total particles and 455 to 2181 bacteria colonies per cubic meter. The particles also had organic carbon and water-soluble inorganic ions. Aerated grit chambers created more aerosols than vortex-type chambers. Indoor treatment areas had more aerosol buildup than outdoor ones.

Wastewater microorganisms were the main source of these bacteria. The type and variety of wastewater affected how many and what kind of aerosols were released. The process of aerosol creation in aerated chambers was studied using bubble bursting experiments. These showed that small spray droplets led to higher bioaerosol concentrations. Some harmful bacteria like Arcobacter and Aeromonas were found in these aerosols. These findings can help understand the risks and causes of aerosol particles in wastewater treatment plants.
