Adding a Side Ligament Fix to ACL Surgery: Benefits and Risks

In recent years, doctors have started doing something extra during anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstructions. They're adding a procedure called anterolateral ligament reconstruction (ALLR) or lateral extra-articular tenodesis (LET). This involves fixing a ligament on the outer side of the knee. Doctors are concerned that it might cause new problems like too much pressure on the outer knee, stiffness, infections, or issues with the tunnels created during surgery.

A recent study looked at many research papers to compare the results of ACL surgery with and without this extra step. They found that while it does reduce the risk of injuring the new ACL again, it doesn't seem to cause more complications.
