A Young Graduate's Surprising Path to Teaching

Meet Aron, a 22-year-old with big dreams of an MBA and a career in business. But for now, he's found himself in a classroom, teaching special education at an elementary charter school in Columbus, Ohio. How did he end up here? It's all thanks to Teach for America (TFA), a nonprofit that recruits recent college grads to teach in underserved schools. Aron, who studied political science and psychology, wasn't planning to teach. But when he learned about TFA through the Association of Latino Professionals for America, he saw a chance to help achieve his long-term goals. Teaching isn't an easy job. It's known for low pay and high stress. But TFA offers financial stability and a chance to make a real impact early in a career. Aron could have taught in Miami or New York, but he chose to stay in Columbus. Having friends and family nearby helps, and his $49, 000 starting salary lets him live comfortably.

Aron's day starts early, at 7:30 a. m. , preparing for classes that begin at 9. He works one-on-one with students, helping them read or understand math. He also visits students in their classrooms to provide individualized instruction. His day ends at 4:15 p. m. , but the work continues with lesson planning and meetings. He tries to leave by 6 p. m. for some gym time. The job has its challenges. Students sometimes arrive late due to transportation issues. But the rewards are great, like teaching a child to read. "That's the most emotionally rewarding part, " Aron says.
